What is Resilience?
Resilience is an essential skill set for our times and one that has been pushed to the edge over the past year. But what actually is resilience?
Resilience refers to the capacity of people to cope with stress and challenge, which includes:
Coping well with high levels of ongoing disruptive change
Sustaining good health and energy when under constant pressure
Bouncing back from setbacks
Overcoming adversities
Psychological flexibility to change to new ways of thinking and living when old ways are no longer viable
Maintaining integrity by not acting out or behaving in dysfunctional or harmful ways
Resilience is not a trait that people either have or do not have. It involves behaviours, thoughts, and actions that can be learned and developed in anyone.
Most importantly, Resilience is an individual process. What works for one person, will not necessarily work for the next person. We all have our own unique recipe that works best for us.
While some of us may be lucky to have well developed resilience skills, most of us benefit from taking a step back, refining and enhancing our resilience tool-kit.
A mindfulness app or lunchtime yoga is unlikely to meet everyone’s needs when it comes to building resilience.
We need to build individual resilience skills as well as recognising the role the workplace plays in supporting or undermining the resilience and wellbeing of the workforce.
